Third Avenue Management LLC, a quiet yet influential investor in distressed companies, is buying a lot of debt and equity in North American auto companies. Collins & Aikman Corp. is prepared this summer to name Third Avenue the successful bidder to buy and recapitalize the interiors supplier so it can emerge from Chapter 11 protection, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
Third Avenue also targets GM, Axle, Superior.
